There was an estimated 3.3 million pickleball players in the U.S. in 2019. It’s safe to say that it’s a growing sport, meaning you need to be on the top of your game when you’re out there playing! But what are some ways to really hone in on your pickleball technique? What should you be doing to up your game?

That’s what we’re here to look at today. Read on to find out more about improving your pickleball technique here.

1. Always Be Ready

A ready position is essential when you’re on the court. Consistency is the key to being an elite pickleball player, and there’s no better way to remain consistent in your shot than always being ready.

Before every shot taken by either you or your partner, it’s important that you assume the right stance. Keep your feet shoulder-length apart and put the weight on the balls of your feet.

Don’t forget to keep your shoulders relaxed and to bend the knees slightly. Being comfortable in this stance will ultimately improve your shot and overall pickleball prowess.

2. Perfecting the “Third” Shot

When you think about a typical pickleball sequence, the third shot stands out as a prime opportunity for the serving side. It’s the first shot you get after you’ve served it and it’s also the best opportunity to score a quick point.

The goal of the third shot is to let you transition over to the net. In a perfect world, the arc will peak on your end and drop to the opponent’s side.

Train this third shot with your partner whenever you can. Doing so will help you take control of a game’s tempo and lead you to the W.

3. Learning How to Dink

The dink shot is similar to the short drop shot in tennis in which a shot is placed from your non-volley zone lightly to the opponent’s side. The key is to place it where the opponent simply won’t be able to reach it.

While learning a good backhand and front stroke is crucial to keep games going, perfecting the dink will help you finish rallies the right way. Working on your soft game this way can stem the tide of any match.

If your opponent has a power advantage, you can easily shift the game in your favor by working on your dink shot. While operating in the non-volley zone is intimidating, it’s essential when you’re in a slower game.

4. Communicating With Partner

Building a rapport with your partner and always being in sync on the court is a pickleball technique that isn’t talked about enough. Communication is always key when playing with a partner.

When you aren’t sure where your partner is during a rally, call your shots by saying “mine” to make sure no one gets confused. If you think a ball is going to go out but your partner doesn’t have a good angle, call it out.

You should also come up with a few hand signals or calls with your partner. These don’t have to be complicated but just intuitive enough so you don’t have to yell at each other throughout an entire match.
