The Best Doubles Strategy to Outsmart your Opponents

Tennis is a game of strategy and wits. You have to be quick on your feet and quicker with your hands, and if you take your mind off the ball of even a fraction of a second, you could lose the round.

Now multiply that by two, and you’ll begin to understand the challenges of playing doubles.

A doubles tennis match can be a cluster of rackets on a small court, but when done right, a strong doubles strategy can help you take on the odds and win the match. All it takes is a bit of tennis court ingenuity — and we have quite a bit for you here.

Read this article to learn about a few tips and tricks you can do to help win your next tennis doubles match. You’ll be looking like a pro in no time.

With Doubles Strategy, Touch and Placement Are Paramount

One of the most important things you need to know about double matches is that it’s not about the power — it’s about the placement.

In singles matches, you can place more power behind your stroke because you have more freedom to move and more court space on your opponent’s side to serve on. In a doubles match, the exact opposite is true.

Learn how to finesse your serves and swings so you can better control where the ball lands and help your teammate to better predict the opponent’s (and their own) next move.

Always Cover the Middle

When it comes to defense, always remember to cover your middle (we can’t stress this enough).

In a singles match, players tend to stay somewhere in the middle of the court throughout the match so they can move quickly to all regions. In doubles, one player covers more of the front while the other covers the rear, leaving the middle pretty well unguarded.

Your opponents will know this, and will exploit this weakness anytime they see a chance. Don’t give them a lucky break to do just that!

Communication Is Key

Remember, this is a team match that requires team effort. If you fail to communicate, you fail to win.

Both of you should know everything about one another’s playstyle: your strengths, your weaknesses, and which setups and serves help you win games. If you’ve been playing long enough, this knowledge should be second nature.

Direct communication on the court is equally as important and certainly encouraged. Make sure to call shots, help predict the opponents’ setups, and generally keep each other on your toes.
